We're looking for a few good bloggers
By Sean Callahan
We're looking for a few good bloggers SEAN CALLAHAN'S BLOG (April 2, 2009) -- We want more voices on this Web site, so we're looking for more people who'd like to write blogs about Masters sports. Let us know if you're one of those people. We're looking for men and women who are passionate about Masters sports, who compete and who can write clearly. It doesn't matter what your sport is: We're interested in everything from swimming and running and triathlon to rugby and softball and squash. (We're also looking for people who will write for no pay. That's what we mean by "passionate"). If that sounds attractive to you, please send me an email explaining why you'd like to write a blog and why you'd be good it. My email address: scallahan@masters-athlete.com. . . . keep reading...>>
A Masters book
By Sean Callahan
A Masters book SEAN CALLAHAN'S BLOG (March 26, 2009) -- "Second Wind: The Rise of the Ageless Athlete" is a new book about Masters athletes. It's written by Lee Bergquist, a reporter for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, and it's published by Human Kinetics. I saw a copy of the book last year, and Human Kinetics asked me to write a blurb, which I did gladly. Anything to support the cause of Masters athletics. The book won't be available until June, but we do know that among the athletes profiles is Randy Van Zee, a cyclist who held down a full-time job and rode more than 1,000 miles a week to train for a cross country race. After completing the race, it took his body seven months to heal. Now, that's what Masters athletics is all about. . . . keep reading...>>
Old jocks, new tricks
By Sean Callahan
I've always been a big believer in coaching -- mainly when it comes to other people. I see the value of coaching all the time in my two favorite spectator sports: college football and college basketball. In football, whenever a good coach moves to a new school that had been performing poorly on the field, immediately the team starts playing better. You see it with all of today's great ones, from Steve Spurrier to Nick Saban. It's the same in college hoops. Current coaches such as Bill Self, Ben Howland and John Calipari always make their teams better, almost immediately. I also believe in coaching for kids. Over the years I've paid coaches to work with my daughters in swimming, tennis and basketball -- not to mention their dance and piano lessons. I've certainly done coaching and teaching work with my girls. . . . keep reading...>>

By Sean Callahan
The National Senior Games Association, which stages the Summer National Senior Games every other year, plans to announce a winter festival, which would likely take place later this year. "This is a good thing," said Ray Hoyt, the NSGA's director of national games. "We have some quality cities bidding to host." Among the cities bidding to host the winter festival are Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Providence, R.I., Detroit, Jamestown, N.Y., and Blaine, Minn., according to Hoyt. The NSGA plans to select three cities, each of which will host two winter festivals over a six-year period. . . . keep reading...>>

Corner Office Athletes
By Sean Callahan
John Legere, 47, took over global crossing as CEO in October 2001. In his first few months on the job, he presided over global crossing’s entry into Chapter 11 bankruptcy and testified before Congress. After one such appearance, Legere’s brother saw his picture in the New York Times. “He told me, ‘You look like you’re going to die.’ My face was bloated, my eyes were bloated. I told myself, ‘I’m going to do this job, but I’m not going to let it kill me,’” Legere said. . . . keep reading...>>
