The Top 10 Places to Live for Alpine and Nordic Skiers
By Dan Rabin
The Top 10 Places to Live for Alpine and Nordic Skiers Steamboat Springs, Colo., bills itself as Ski Town, USA. We happen to agree. The marvelous downhill skiing of what may be the best resort in the country is combined with great cross-country skiing up on Rabbit Ears Pass -- not to mention the Olympic jump at Howelsen Hill overlooking downtown. Everything you can do on two skis you can do in style in Steamboat. And our praise of Steamboat takes nothing away from the other nine towns on our list, which span the country from Truckee, Calif.; to Hayward, Wis.; to Stowe, Vt. Read on to see the rest of our choices for the best towns for Masters skiers. . . . keep reading...>>
Women's 40-49 Masters Athlete of the Year: Carolyn Beckedorff
By Brion O'Connor
Women's 40-49 Masters Athlete of the Year: Carolyn Beckedorff Carolyn Beckedorff's ski racing career is going downhill -- fast. In February, the 41-year-old mother won both the slalom and giant slalom events at the U.S. Masters Nationals at Mammoth Mountain in California. For an encore, she won a gold medal in the women's 40-44 age group slalom -- and fourth place overall -- at the FIS Masters World Championships in Austria in April. "Standing on the podium, with the American flag behind me, and two Austrians on either side of me, listening to our national anthem, was pretty darn cool," Beckedorff said. "It wasn't the Olympics, but there were about a thousand people there, and my son was there, so it was quite special." Beckedorff has been skiing since she could walk, but didn't start racing in earnest until she was a teen-ager. . . . keep reading...>>
Sick competition
By Allen Lessels
JAN KARR LEANED ON HER SNOWBOARD and waited her turn in the early April sun. She stood just off the stage and smiled often as the United States of America Snowboarding Association wrapped up its week-long 2008 National Championships at Copper Mountain in Colorado. Karr came to the Rocky Mountains by way of Nuba's Nob in Harbor Springs, Mich. "There's not a lot of vertical," she said of Nuba's Nob. "But we've got a great pipe." Karr, like the rest of the riders from young to old at the championships, loves a great halfpipe. "I love to scare myself," she said before being called to take her place on the podium. "I need to scare myself three times a week or I'm not happy. I guess I'm an adrenaline junkie." . . . keep reading...>>
Mother Nature one tough opponent
By Brion O'Connor
The 2008 Skier's Edge Eastern Masters Championships at Whiteface Mountain in upstate New York was shaping up to be a raucous weekend of competition after a pair of scintillating Super-G events on Friday, March 7. Then Mother Nature delivered a knockout blow. "It couldn't have been better conditions" on Friday, reported Bill McCollum, coordinator for the Eastern regional Masters championships. "The hill was in perfect shape, hard and fast. We had sun filtering through thickening clouds, but nonetheless it was still sunny and warm." The ideal conditions resulted in predictably fast times, with many racers hitting speeds in excess of 60 mph. . . . keep reading...>>
