Best Places to Live
In each issue of Masters Athlete in 2008, we'll provide an in-depth examination of the top 10 places to live for a specific sport. There will be a new sport in each issue, and the sports range from cycling to golf to skiing. We judge the best places to live according to four criteria: climate/terrain, training and playing facilities, events and number of local participants. Here's a list of the "best places to live" sports we'll be covering this year:
January/February: Pickleball
March/April: Triathlon
May: Running
June: Cycling
July/August: Tennis
September: Softball and Baseball
October/November: Golf
December: Skiing

For its marvelous routes for both mountain bikers and road racers, Durango, Colo., tucked in the southwestern corner of the state, earns Masters Athlete's nod as the No. 1 town for Masters cyclists to live. Durango and the other nine cities on our list made the cut, because they each scored high in four areas: climate/terrain, training facilities, events and number of local riders. The large majority of the places populating our list are in the West, where the combination of hills and wide-open spaces tends to make for good riding. All of these cities, however, may one day be eclipsed by a community in the eastern United States that is not on our list (but is described in greater detail at the end of this story). Currently in the planning stages, Pla d'Adet, in the hills of South Carolina, is a community that will be built around cycling, the way that developments in Florida and Arizona are built around golf. The summaries of our top 10 cycling towns for Masters riders begin below. . . . keep reading...>>

The towns were judged on facilities, both in terms of quantity and quantity; the number and quality of players; and the weather. In the end, only one community could be called Pickleball Paradise: The Villages, the mammoth active adult community in central Florida, that boasts 150 outdoor courts and 2,000 players. The weather, the leagues and tournaments run by the Villages' famed recreation department and the sheer number of residents looking for a game on a daily basis make this community Pickleball Paradise. . . . keep reading...>>
