Track Town USA, Day 3
By Lisa Menninger
Another beautiful day at Hayward Field. Perfect conditions for a slightly shorter day of events. One of the most exciting was the Women's 1500-meter final. With Shannon Rowbury and Anna Williard in the field, as well as the overall fastest qualifier in the prelim, Kristin Wurth-Thomas, it promised to be a great race. And it was. The first lap the pack remained together. About 700 meters into the race Wurth-Thomas took off hard. Her pace was aggressive and it was a bold move. The pack didn't chase and Wurth-Thomas opened up a large gap. Sensing the gap would continue to get wider, Shannon Rowbury took off with about 350 meters to go with Anna Willard trying to move ahead with her. Rowbury passed Wurth-Thomas in the last straightaway with a huge kick but Wurth-Thomas held off Willard and they finished in 4:05:07, 4:06:00 and 4:07:70 respectively. The men's 400-meter final had favorite LaShawn Merritt winning in 44.53, with a stunning perfomance by Gil Roberts in second and Kerron Clement rounding out the US Team in 45.14. Sanya Richards easily won the women's 400-meter final in 50.05 with unattached Debbi Dunn in 50.70 and Jessica Beard in 50.81. Former BYU Steeplechaser Joshua McAdams won the men's 3000-meter steeplechase final in 8:29.9 with Daniel Huling in second in 8:32 and Kyle Alcorn in third in 8:34. Dwight Phillips dominated the long jump finals, winning by more than a foot. His jump of 28 feet, 1.5 inches beat second place Brian Johnson's best of 27 feet, 1.25 inches. George Kitchens placed third with a 27 footer. In the 200-meter prelims, Shawn Crawford, Jeremy Warnier, Chris Lawson amd Xavier Carter all advanced as well as Allyson Felix, Marshevet Hooker and Lauryn WIlliams and Muna Lee on the women's side. Finals on Sunday include the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and 800-meter run for men and women, the shot put, the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, and the men's 1500-meter run.
