Expecting the unexpected
By Sean Callahan
Here are two stories that took me by suprise, even though by now I should know better. First, did you know there's a Stickball Hall of Fame? Well, there is. It's in New York, of course. Marty Ross told me about the hall. Most likely because he's going to be inducted on July 10 in ceremonies that will be held at the Museum of the City of New York. Ross, who is 68 and originally from New York, now lives in Wellington, Fla., where he started a stickball league for men in their 60s, 70s and 80s. The league is in its seventh season. One of our correspondents, Ray Glier, wrote a story about Ross' league in our magazine. You can read it by clicking here. I'm hoping that one day the generation that came after Ross -- the generation that grew up in the suburbs -- will have a hall of fame for our game: Wiffleball. Maybe I'd have a shot at the hall of fame. I was a pretty good Wiffleball player.
The other thing that took me by surprise was there is an upcoming hockey tournament for 80-year-olds. Here is Stu Hyatt's post on our forum announcing the event:
"The Geriatric Hockey League of Burnaby, BC will host the worlds first tournament that will have an 80+ division. All 80+ players are invited, however, we only have space for six teams (maximum of sixty skaters). Cost is $55 and every entrant will receive a souvenir T-shirt. There will be three games for each team. Players will be assigned to teams with the attempt to have even and quality play. The initial puck drop will be by a Canuck Alumni player. All players are invited for this history making photo. The tournament is Sept. 8th through 10th., 2009 in Burnaby, BC (a suburb of Vancouver).
