Devlin wins sprint at second annual Masters Triathlon Championships
Clark, Gray and Zittel also win titles in event for athletes 40 and older Scott Devlin, of Hunter's Creek, Fla., held off Greg Brown, of Orlando, Fla., to win the men's sprint division of the second annual Masters Triathlon Championships, which were held Sunday, Oct. 26, in Orlando. Devlin, who gets his good lungs as a saxophone player at Walt Disney World, exited the water after the 750-meter swim with a 2 minute-lead over Brown. Although Brown gained almost a minute on the 20k bike portion of the race, Devlin gained back most of his lead from the swim on the 2.75-mile run, finishing in 1:01:02, almost two minutes in front of Brown, who crossed the finish line in 1:02:53. "I had the lead after the bike, so I felt good," Devlin said. "My run is a little stronger." In the women's sprint triathlon Kim Clark of Maple Valley, Wash., outlasted Ann H. Mehrer of Newnan, Ga. Clark finished in 1:23:35, more than 3 minutes faster than Mehrer's time of 1:27:01. In the women's Olympic distance triathlon, Colleen Zittel of Heathrow, Fla., won with a time of 2:21:50. In the men's Olympic distance race, Christopher Gray of Windermere, Fla., won with a time of 2:07:33, but no man over 40 completed the 1,500-meter swim, 40k bike and 5.5-mile run faster than 48-year-old Brian Forgue, who finished in 2:01:32, good enough to finish second in the open race that was held along with the Masters Triathlon Championship. Forgue, who is from Longwood, Fla., recently returned to triathlon after a 10-year layoff. "I'm probably better now," he said. "I'm stronger than ever. I'm faster than ever." He attributed his improvement to training smart, not simply pounding out the miles in the pool, on the bike and on the road. Forgue had hoped to win the overall race, but he settled for second, which the father of two and Cub Scout leader said fits with the organization's motto: Do your best.
