Men's 70-79 Nominees

Robert Duesler * Tennis * Newport Beach, Calif.

The No. 1-ranked singles players in the U.S. Tennis Association's men's 70 age group, Duesler lost a single match all year, and the defeat came in the finals of the USTA's indoor national championship. He posted an undefeated doubles record.

Dave Bauer * Rowing * Denver

Bauer, 72, traveled from Denver to Boston in February to compete in the CRASH-B Sprints, also known as the Indoor Rowing World Championships. Bauer won the lightweight men's 70-74 age group with a time of 7 minutes, 28 seconds. He took up rowing at the age of 55 after his competitive running gave him a case of sciatica.

Rod Hall * Off-Road Racing * Reno, Nev.

In November 2007, Hall celebrated his 70th birthday by completing his 40th Baja 1000 off-road race with a victory in the Stock Mini class. He posted a victory in the original Mexican 1000, as it was called back then, in 1968. Hall has 19 wins in various classes, the most of any driver.

Gordon Varnedoe * Weightlifting * Savannah, Ga.

Varnedoe is a five-time gold medalist in Masters Weightlifting. In April, he defended his National Masters Weightlifting championship for the 70-74 age group in his weight class with a total lift of 85kg.
