Men's 40-49 Nominees
Steve Tilford * Cyclo-Cross * Topeka, Kan. Tilford did not disappoint a hometown crowd at USA Cycling Cyclo-Cross National Championships in Kansas City, Kan. Against 119 other riders in the men's 45-49 age group. Tilford was out in front from the gun and never looked back. He defended his title convincingly, with the next closest competitor almost two minutes behind. Gerry Brockman * Ice Hockey * Minneapolis Brockman was a key part of the Secret Aged Men squad that won a championship in the 40+ age group at the USAdult Hockey Pond Hockey Championships. He averaged five goals and five assists in four games, including the championship game, which was played in a blizzard. Vinnie Sombrotto * Lacrosse * Port Washington, N.Y. A National Lacrosse Hall of Fame inductee, Sombrotto led his team, the Slo Moes, to championship of the 2008 Florida Lacrosse Classic. For his effort, he was named MVP of the tournament. The Slo Moes stayed undefeated through four rounds of competition. Adrian Serrano * Mixed Martial Arts * Milwaukee In February, Serrano beat a 19-year-old fighter by submission, adding to his extremely high-winning percentage. He has an overall record of 89 wins, 29 losses and four draws in his 12-year career in mixed martial arts. He has fought and held titles in Brazil, Japan and all over the U.S. He also is a two-time Extreme Challenge champion. Byron Nix * Cycling * Littleton, Colo. John Simpson * Track and Field * Corsicana, Texas At the USA Masters Outdoor Track and Field Championships in August, Simpson sped to a first-place finish in the men's 40-44 200-meter dash with a time of 22.58. He raced in the 100-meter dash and finished second to Aaron Thigpen's 11.00 by 0.15 seconds. At the World Masters Athletics Indoor Championships in France in March, Simpson took first place in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes as well as in the 4x100-meter relay.
