Letters from September 2007 issue

A spirited joint venture

My name is Maurice Wesley, a 63-year-old racquetball player and subscriber to GeezerJock. In October 2006 my wife, Sylvia, had her right hip replaced. In February 2007 I had my second hip replacement. We decided to create a memento for the two occasions (we'll celebrate anything!). In March of this year, we made our own wine and custom label at Vintner's Cellar Winery of Portland in Maine. It has been a big hit with our surgeon and all our friends. You cannot imagine how surprised we were when the May/June issue of GeezerJock and the "Operating instructions" story on joint replacements came to the house. Your cover headline, "Joint Venture," is the name of our wine! Here is a copy of our label for you. We love GeezerJock magazine; it helps keeps us feeling young. By the way, we both had the minimally invasive anterolateral approach--in the hospital less than 24 hours, back to work in four weeks, and back to racquetball in six weeks.

Support for Mathews

Great magazine. I think George Mathews is right on about USA Track & Field not being interested in Masters sports ["The gospel according to Mathews," GeezerJock, March/April 2007]. We are amateurs who do the sport not for money but for enjoyment and love of the sport. USATF is great for some but not for Masters.

"Granny basketball"

I am a soon-to-be 60-year-old woman, and I receive your publication. I am also a Granny Basketball player. I think an article on this sport open to women 50 and above would be of interest to your readers. We aren't the cream of the crop, but we have a passion for basketball and having fun. We range in age from 50 to 81. You can learn about us at www.grannybasketball.com. I love your magazine. It is very inspiring and just plain fun to read.

"Good work"

Although Masters track and field is the sport I compete in, I thoroughly enjoy the articles you print in GeezerJock on other Masters/senior sports. It's good to see so many seniors of all ages engaged in a healthy lifestyle through sports. You all publish an exciting and interesting magazine. Keep up the good work!

My old school

Great article on the Buffalo Masters basketball tournament ["Having a ball," GeezerJock, May/June 2007]. As a senior basketball player at 69 and captain of our Team Virginia 3-on-3 state medal winner, I would like more information on the tournament. I got my B.S. from Buffalo State College and my doctorate from the University of Buffalo, and I would love to play back at my former school.

Rants. Raves. Loved it. Hated it. Tell us about it...
