Men 60-69: GeezerJock of the Year Nominees

The following men have been nominated for the 2006 Michelob ULTRA GeezerJock of the Year Award in the Men 60-69 category:

Emil Pawlik
Track & Field/Jackson, Miss.

Pawlik, 66, was named 2005 Masters Athlete of the Year by USA Track & Field. He won the M65 decathlon with an age-group world record 7,909 points at the USA Track and Field Masters National Decathlon and Heptathlon Championships in July. He also posted an M65 American record in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking 15.81 seconds to win a gold medal at the World Masters Outdoor Championships in San Sebastian, Spain.

John Whittington
Track & Field/Henderson, Nev.

About a week after Whittington had a baseball-sized tumor rumored from the right side of his head, he showed up for the Nevada State Senior Olympics in September to throw the javelin. Brain surgery wasn’t going to stop the man from competing. Still sporting bandages and sutures, Whittington needed only one throw to win the event. “The throw was shorter than my toss of last year, [but] I still came away with the win,” he said.

Wayne Markett
Softball, Touch Football/Downers Grove, Ill.

Markett, 61, is a cleanup hitting outfielder on the Chicago Classics 60-plus team, which is a perennial contender in senior softball tournaments across the country. He stays in shape for softball by playing basketball, volleyball and touch football, which he plays every Sunday with his sons and their friends, who still call him “Wheels.”
