Pond Hockey: Winning was Job 1

Bill Ford & Co. win the inaugural Labatt Blue USAdult Pond Hockey Championships

Dollar Lake in Eagle River, Wis., was the site of the first annual Labatt Blue USAdult Pond Hockey Championships in February. Despite a low temperature of 28 degrees below zero, the tournament, which was run by  USA Hockey, attracted 41 teams. “It was beyond cold,” said Jim Kwilos, 50, who played on the 40-and-over bracket champion, Team Ford from Dearborn, Mich.

Ford Motor Co. Chairman-CEO Bill Ford was on the team, whose uniforms sported the car company’s logo. “He’s one of the better players on our team,” Kwilos said of Ford, “and he’s intensely competitive like most of us.” Team Ford went undefeated through its bracket, winning its four games by a combined score of 43-25. In the championship game, Team Ford edged the Panthers of Richfield, Wis., by a score of 12-11.
